Introduction

In 1995 the average UK house price was £50,930*.

By the end of 2007 they had more than trebled to more than £170,000. That's an increase of more than 200%.

During this time average wages have failed to keep pace rising only 54% leaving house prices more unaffordable than they have ever been.

This graph shows house prices with the effects of inflation filtered out. As you can see we are at the top of the largest house price boom ever recorded.

Salaries

Whilst house prices have been rocketing salaries have not been keeping up. The next graph plots the ratio of average house prices to average salary over the years. As you can see house prices are at a record ratio, nearly 6 times the average salary.
