Demonstration in Brighton

We'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended the protest in Brighton on 13th May, at Gordon Brown's speech at the Dome Theatre. The protest was discussed on More4 News, including an interview with Priced Out and a photo from the protest on the big screen in the background. A spokesperson was also interviewed on News24 on the day, and also went on Radio 5 Live and the Today Programme on Radio 4 the morning after. Priced Out also did an interview with a reporter from The Argus, and the protest was featured in the Daily Mail, Guardian, Channel 4 News, The Times, TalkSport radio, Southern FM, BBC Southern Counties radio and various other websites in the week building up. We've certainly given the campaign some publicity and got the message out there.  Thanks to our members for their continued support.
Protest
We have organised a protest to coincide with Gordon Brown's appearance in Brighton this weekend (Sunday 13th May 2007, 2.30pm). See our press release for more details on the event and rational behind it.

If you are planning on attending please let us know in advance, email mike@pricedout.org.uk, so we can keep track of numbers and get your contact details to keep you up to date on the event.

See below for details on the arrangements for the day.

We will keep this page updated with the latest information please check back before you leave in case important details such as the rendezvous point change.

We have been in contact with the Police and we've been advised that for security reasons there will be a high Police presence there that day. However this won't interfere with our plans, which they are aware of, so please don't be put off by it on the day.
Getting There

Train times from London:

Trains depart to Brighton regularly from both London Victoria and London Bridge. There is a 12.34 train from Victoria, which gets in at 1.50pm, and will give you enough time to get to the protest. There is also a 12.41 from London Bridge, which gets in at 1.52pm.

Directions from the train station:

When you exit the station, walk past the bus stops in front of you, cross the road and walk straight down Queens Road (where The Queens Head pub is situated). Turn left on Church Street, and walk down to the bottom towards The Pavillion Gardens. You’ll get to the entrance of The Brighton Dome Theatre just before the entrance to the gardens.

The protest will be situated across the road from the theatre entrance on Church Street, outside the Old Court Room. You’ll be able to spot us with the Priced Out banner across the bollards, as well as various Priced Out placards

Parking:

Brighton has a particularly eccentric one-way system, and the traffic can get particularly clogged up at weekends. If you’re coming to Brighton by car, then you’re advised to add some extra time to your journey to compensate for this. We advise parking at the NCP car park on Church Street (on the same street as the venue or, if that’s full, you can also park at the NCP car park on Trafalgar Street, which is about a ten-minute walk away.

Car Park Location Map

From the Trafalgar Street car park, you need to get on to Whitecross Street, and then turn left back on to Trafalgar Street. After that, turn a sharp right onto Sydney Street and then continue on to Kensington Street. Then, turn left onto North Road, and then another sharp right onto Regent Street. When you get to the end of Regent Street, turn left down Church Street and the protest will be straight ahead of you.

Map:

Here is a map of the specific area of Brighton.

Brighton Train Station, the Dome Theatre and both car parks are clearly marked, so you hopefully shouldn’t have any trouble!

Itinerary
The plan for the protest is to create a large gathering in a prominent place, which will make a good media photo opportunity for our campaign, as well as something that will look good on the TV. The objective is to get across our key messages to Gordon Brown, and the media. There will be a very large media presence there that day and we have already had a lot of interest in covering the protest.

We have put together banners and placards, but will be relying on you to help vocalise your opinions. It is important for the protest to remain well ordered and respectful by not causing disruption to the people in Brighton, or those attending Gordon Brown’s appearance, as anything else would be counter-productive. In this vein we do not want anyone turning up with megaphones or PA systems, or with offensive placards.

Priced Out will provide a selection of placards that you can pick up at the protest. You are, of course, welcome to bring your own, but we would ask that you run your slogan by us first - mike@pricedout.org.uk

Weather - this is the UK so be prepared, bring an umbrella or a waterproof just in case.
The planned schedule is as follows:

2.30pm (sharp) - Congregate outside the Old Court Room on Church Street
2.40pm - Photo opportunity
2.50pm - Protesting, & presentations from Audacity
3.10pm - Disperse

Please allow plenty of time to be there for the start at 2.30pm
Protest Materials
Here are some of the promotional materials for the protest and a sampler of the placards we will be using.

Please feel free to use these to help promote the protest and the campaign but do not use any of these materials in such a way that would violate the law or bring the campaign into disrepute i.e. no fly posting.

If you are unclear as to what you can and can't do with any of this material please refer to this BBC Action Network Guide to Leafleting.
More from our stash of placards closer to the time.
