Taking very rough estimates for a hypothetical Brick built shack 10' by 10' I have calculated that it would take 2400 ordinary house bricks for the walls costing £1100.00 or approx 50p per brick at current rates. This is for using English Bond laying (2 wide or 9" thick-the minimum to repel cold) .Add on foundations, roof and you might count on another £1000 or so making a total of somewhere around £2100.00 excluding any refinements like plumbing, sanitation, heating, doors etc. If you added on Labour I dont know probably £2000-£3000 (?)would probably take about 3-4 weeks to build? Total £5000! This does not compare badly to renting for a year at £90.00 p.w. So for 1 year it would actually be cheaper to rent than build your own shack! But of course in the long run it would not be assuming the shack was not bulldozed by The Local Council. But for people who only wanted to live say a year in a place it would becheaper to rent than build. Multiply by about 8 to cover a 3 bedroom house and the cost of material alone would come to £16,000. Quite a hefty sum never mind todays add ons. So it appears houses are not going to be "Cheap" even DIY ones!

It's cheaper if the building lasts for 50 years, -a typical building's lifetime.
