It found that the amount of people who regard themselves as "comfortably off or managing easily" dropped from 64 per cent in 2006 to around half this year.
At the same time those who described their circumstances as "pretty tight" jumped from 25 per cent to 39 per cent, according to the survey of 1,927 adults for Mintel.
The number of people who are finding their financial commitments "almost impossible" and may have already missed payments has doubled to 4 per cent.
