Petition the government to target an end to rising house prices

In the past decade, the number of people stuck in the private rented sector has doubled. Houses already cost 10 times the average salary and their price keeps rising faster than wages. Now it takes a family 12 years to save a deposit on the average house, and today’s young adults are expected to be worse off than their parents.

The only way housing will become affordable is if earnings start rising faster than house prices. By setting a house price inflation target of zero percent, the government would need to focus on fixing the housing market. But they won’t do anything unless they know people will vote for it.

Why we are calling for the government to target 0% house price inflation

Our proposed solutions

We, the undersigned, call on Her Majesty’s Government to set a house price inflation target of zero percent and to pursue policies to achieve this including a programme of housebuilding, property tax reform, and providing rented housing that tenants aren’t desperate to escape.

There has to be real changes in policies to dissuade foreign investors and buy to let landlords from treating property in the UK as a commodity. The problems do not lie solely with supply but the ease and incentives of buying/investing in property. We can build more homes and move out as far away as we can from work/places of interest but if the current policies remain the same, the problems will remain the same considering the UK housing market is open to any person in the world. The government seems to only make policies geared to the ‘haves’ and have no incentives to make real changes.

Working people should have the ability to own their own home. The extortionate rise in house prices will only have negative effects for all who don’t own homes, and thus far far more should be done to ensure that the people who live here can do so in the safety of their own homes, not someone elses. Currently very politicians have a reasonable policy on housing, whether for vested interests or not who knows, but the crisis must be tackled sooner rather than later.

House prices are so expensive in the south east that young people are being forced to move away from the places they were born and bought up in. Even council estate homes are disgustingly priced..small tiny houses in the south and your looking at around £280.000 upwards!

Many more houses need to be built , cut red tape and cap the amount of homes people can own to rent out to 5 or less, sadly this will never happen “good old fashion greed”
