Petition the government to target an end to rising house prices

In the past decade, the number of people stuck in the private rented sector has doubled. Houses already cost 10 times the average salary and their price keeps rising faster than wages. Now it takes a family 12 years to save a deposit on the average house, and today’s young adults are expected to be worse off than their parents.

The only way housing will become affordable is if earnings start rising faster than house prices. By setting a house price inflation target of zero percent, the government would need to focus on fixing the housing market. But they won’t do anything unless they know people will vote for it.

Why we are calling for the government to target 0% house price inflation

Our proposed solutions

We, the undersigned, call on Her Majesty’s Government to set a house price inflation target of zero percent and to pursue policies to achieve this including a programme of housebuilding, property tax reform, and providing rented housing that tenants aren’t desperate to escape.

I am seeing (foreign?) Property developers cramming in high rise flats into urban areas at prices that only the very rich can afford.

People want to own their own home. A freehold home, with a garden. Eventually everyone gets sick and old. What will happen when you cannot pay your rent anymore? What happens if you can no longer use the stairs when the lift is out of order? Maybe those property developers will be given public money to build poor houses for the elderly and infirm.

To develop community pride and healthy minds and bodies, people(children especially) need to live in houses with gardens. Some plot of land that belongs to them and they can pass onto their children. It truly is a retrograde step to stuff people into overpriced flats.

Finally, many people who buy flats will have a very nasty shock. No longer are you in charge of when you do repairs. You cannot budget. These decisions to employ a particular builder to re-do the roof or replace all the windows are no longer under your control. Many people end up having to leave as they cannot keep up with the demands for increasing maintenance charges and rennovation costs.

The only people who benefit are the rich who have shares in these property development companies

I have saved and saved for the last few years to be able to buy a decent home, but still can’t afford to buy the way house prices have increased. Homes should be for the majority real hardworking people to be able to live in and not for speculation and satisfy the greed of a few.

My daughter works rural but lives city. Can not afford to buy home

in city so must seek a home deeper in rural areas.

Rising house prices only profit the friends of those on power. Let us bring

    the prices down, please.

Sick and tired of landlords and over priced housing. I want to buy. If you can pay rent you can pay a mortgage.
