PricedOut

Privacy

What we collect, why, who else sees it, how long we keep it, and how to make us delete it. This covers www.pricedout.org.uk and everything PricedOut does with the details you give us.

The short version

PLAIN ENGLISH

  • We ask for your details in one place, the signup forms: your first name and your email address. If you volunteer to show your flatshare, also roughly where you live, and only if you choose to tell us, a phone number, your rent and a few facts about your home. Nothing else.
  • On the flatshare campaign, signing up is how you get your invitation. Joining the mailing list is a separate tick box and you do not have to tick it: your letter opens either way.
  • Everything you give us is held in Mailchimp. None of it is stored on this website or in the code behind it.
  • This site sets no cookies. Nothing here follows you around other websites, and there is no cookie banner because there is nothing to consent to.
  • If you use the flatshare tool, your postcode never leaves your browser. Nor does anything you tell the tool about your own flatshare, such as your rent or whether you share a bathroom: that goes straight into your letter. We never see any of it. The volunteer form is different: there you are telling us.
  • Ask us to delete your details and we will. One email does it.

The rest of this page is the same thing said carefully, because that is what the law asks for.

What we collect

WhatWhenDo you have to give it?
First nameWhen you sign upYes
Email addressWhen you sign upYes
Your parliamentary constituencyIf you sign up on the flatshare campaign, after entering a postcode in the tool or from a constituency’s own page, we record which constituency you are in, so we know where our supporters areWe work it out from the postcode in your browser rather than asking, and we never receive the postcode itself. On a constituency page it is the one the page is about. Sign up from the home page and there is nothing to record
Where you live, a town or an areaIf you volunteer to show your flatshareYes, on that form. A town is enough; we do not ask for an address or a postcode
Phone numberIf you volunteer to show your flatshareNo
About your flatshare: what you pay for your room each month, how many people you live with, and whether you share a bathroom and a living roomIf you volunteer to show your flatshareNo. Each one is optional. Whether anything about your home is ever filmed or published is a separate conversation, and needs your agreement first
Last nameThe signup form on the home page offers a field for itNo
Technical information: your IP address, your browser, and which pages you asked forAutomatically, on every visit, in our hosting provider’s logsThis is how the internet works rather than something we ask for. We do not use it to identify you

What we do not collect

Your postcode. The flatshare tool matches it against a list of postcodes that is built into the page and downloaded to your device, so the matching happens inside your browser. Your postcode is never sent to us, never appears in any log of ours, and is never stored. If you sign up, the only thing that reaches us is the name of your constituency.

Who you write to. The invitation to your MP opens in your own email program and is sent from your own address. We are not copied in, we never see it, and we hold no record of which MPs have been written to or by whom.

What you tell the flatshare tool about your home. It asks what you pay for your room, whether you share a bathroom and whether you have a sitting room. Every one of those is optional, and none of them ever reaches us. They are written into your letter in your own browser, exactly like your postcode, and the letter goes from you to your MP without passing through us. The volunteer form asks some of the same questions, and there the answers you choose to give do reach us, as the table above says.

Anything else. There are no accounts and no logins on this site, so there is nothing to profile. We take no payments through it. We do not ask for your address, your income or your age, and we make no decisions about you by automated means.

Why we use it, and our lawful basis

What forLawful basis
Emailing you about the campaignYour consent, which is the box you ticked. Regulation 22 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations also requires it
Holding your name and email address so we know who has asked to invite their MP, and can help and follow upOur legitimate interests in running the campaign. This one is deliberately not consent: on the flatshare campaign you have to sign up to read your invitation, and a consent you have to give to get the thing you came for is not freely given, so it would not be worth anything. Ticking the mailing list is separate, is never required, and is real consent
Knowing which constituencies our supporters are in, so we can organise where people actually areThe same legitimate interests, for the same reason
Getting in touch with people who volunteer to show their flatshare, by email or by phone if they gave a number, to arrange a video tour or a visit from their MPOur legitimate interests in running the campaign. Filming your home, or publishing a video, a name or a photograph, is never done on this basis: we ask you first and only go ahead with your explicit agreement
Keeping the site working, and secure against attacksOur legitimate interests in running a website that stays up and is not abused
Counting visits, in aggregate, so we know if anyone is readingOur legitimate interests. No cookies are involved and nothing is stored on your device, so there is nothing for you to consent to
Records of donations made through our previous website, which we no longer acceptA legal obligation. A company has to keep records of its income for six years

Where we rely on your consent you can withdraw it whenever you like, and withdrawing it is as easy as giving it: use the unsubscribe link in any email, or email us. Withdrawing consent does not undo anything we did while we had it, but it stops everything from that point on.

Who else sees it

We do not sell your details. We do not pass them to political parties, to candidates, or to any campaign other than our own. The only organisations that handle them are the ones we need to do the job:

  • Mailchimp, run by Intuit, holds the mailing list and the contact records, including your name, your email address and your constituency, and, if you volunteered to show your flatshare, where you live and anything else you chose to tell us on that form. This is our only store of supporter details.
  • Vercel hosts the site, keeps the server logs described above, and provides the visit counting.
  • Stripe continues to process the recurring donations that were set up on our previous website. Nothing on this site talks to Stripe and no new donations are taken through it.

We may also have to disclose personal data if the law requires it, for example in response to a court order.

Your data leaving the UK

Mailchimp and Vercel are both American companies and your details are processed outside the UK, including in the United States. Where that happens we rely on the safeguards in those providers’ data processing terms, which use the UK’s International Data Transfer Addendum or an equivalent approved mechanism. You can ask us for more detail on this.

How long we keep it

  • Your place on the mailing list: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it. If you unsubscribe we keep a record of your email address so that we do not accidentally email you again, which is the one thing we hold on to because you asked us to stop. Tell us to erase that too and we will.
  • What you told us when you volunteered, including where you live, your phone number and the details of your home: for as long as the campaign runs and we might be in touch about it, and we delete them the day you ask.
  • Server logs:for a short period, on our hosting provider’s standard retention, and then they are gone. We do not copy them anywhere.
  • Donation records from the old website: six years from the last donation, because company and tax records have to be kept that long, and then they are deleted.

Cookies, and how we count visits

This site sets no cookies of its own. Not for analytics, not for advertising, not for anything. That is why there is no cookie banner: there is nothing here for you to accept or reject. Our hosting provider may set a cookie that is strictly necessary to keep the site secure or to serve you the right version of a page, and a strictly necessary cookie does not need your consent.

One thing is worth naming because it is storage even though it is not a cookie. When you sign up on the flatshare campaign, your browser remembers that you did, so that reading your invitation and then opening your constituency page does not ask you twice. It is a single yes, kept in your browser’s session storage, never sent to us, and gone the moment you close the tab.

We count visits using Vercel Analytics, which does not use cookies, does not store anything on your device, and does not build a profile of you or follow you to other websites. What we get is aggregate numbers: how many people looked at a page.

The fonts and images on this site are served from this site. Nothing is loaded from Google, from a content delivery network, or from a social network, so visiting a page here does not quietly tell any of them that you did.

Your rights

You have the right to:

  • Be told what we hold about you and what we do with it, which is what this page is for.
  • See it. Ask for a copy of your personal data and we will send it.
  • Correct it if it is wrong or out of date.
  • Have it deleted. Ask, and we will, unless the law requires us to keep a particular record.
  • Restrict what we do with it while a question about it is being sorted out.
  • Object to us using it, including for direct marketing, which we will always honour.
  • Take it with you. Ask for it in a portable, machine-readable form.
  • Withdraw your consent at any time.
  • Not be subject to a decision made purely by a machine. We make no such decisions, so this one is easy.

To use any of them, email team@pricedout.org.uk. We will reply within one month, and it will not cost you anything. We may ask you to confirm who you are first, so that we do not hand your details to someone else.

If we get it wrong

Tell us first and we will try to put it right. If you are not satisfied you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office, which is the UK’s data protection regulator. Complaining to us does not take away your right to complain to them.

Children

This campaign is aimed at adults renting homes. We do not knowingly collect details from anyone under 16. If you think we have, tell us and we will delete them.

Changes to this page

If what we do with your data changes, this page changes with it, and the date below changes too. If the change is significant and we hold your email address, we will tell you rather than leaving you to notice.
